Classic novels hold a special place in the public imagination, especially tales of love and coming of age. The classic novel collection includes 4 classic novels featuring complex and unique women and explores the often-overlooked intricacies in their relationships with other women. The bright, limited color palettes represent the shining personalities contained in the novels, and the patterns are rich in symbols lifted from the written material.
Process
Project Goals
My top three goals are to elevate my use of color, create great work for my portfolio, and consistently meet deadlines. When going over my illustration influences, I found that almost all the artists I found myself most inspired by had some kind of background in color styling or were known for their use of color. I want to refine my own use of color in an intentional way to create a visually cohesive illustration.

Roughs
I jumped right in with color to get a feel for my limited palette, trying out multiple color ways for each illustration. Below are the directions I moved forward with.
Challenges
As I pushed on with Jane Eyre, Emma, and Anne of Green Gables, Little Women felt like the odd one out. Conceptually, it wasn't fitting in, so I took it back to the drawing board and completely changed the layout.
Patterns
Patterns incoming! Most of the details had been sorted by this point, but I was still working and reworking patterns.
Typography
Finally time to add type! I wrote the blurbs and a back flap conceptual analysis, then laid out the type. The title type was revised and locked up, and the files were then ready for print!
